Are rear brakes necessary with a front disc brake kit?
The rear brake cable brackets are getting in the way of my custom 4 link suspension in the rear. I wonder if I put front disc brakes on my cart would the rear brakes still be necessary?

Front brakes usually work better than rears, but with a cart most of the weight is on the rear unlike a car. You can't steer if the fronts lock. I guess it would work but not be ideal.

But when you hit the brakes your weight still transitions to the front which is why the rear brakes lock up so easy on golf carts..

Yes, but my rears don't lock that easily. Could be what tires you have, what conditions are. I have to push hard on mine to lock them and the cart stops pretty fast, though it only goes 30 or so not gps'ed it yet with the new engine but suspect it will be in that range.

Re: Are rear brakes necessary with a front disc brake kit?
Ever drive a car without functioning rear-brakes?Its' interesting. You need to have rear brakes more than fronts, but when you add fronts, they do a greater percentage of the braking.Try riding a quad or motorcycle and test braking with just rear, just front, then combined. You will understand the whole concept very quickly.Fronts-only can cause dangerous stopping, even spin-outs.Rear-only causes weak,longer-distance stopping.Hope this helps.

Gotcha. OK I'll keep them. Especially since a 62hp 800cc motor is going in there. I'll need all the stopping power I can get.

Not sure on 4 wheels... I could get away with it on the bikes. I only use the rear when I am holding at stoplights and want to let go of the bars. I didn't put new pads on my TLR untill 30K miles... but had done like 3 sets of fronts... LOL!

vbzatty, The real question should be this. With rear disc brakes do I need front brakes? The answer is no. But 4 wheel disc is ideal. |

Nope... and do alot of track time, so on them alot up front. When you hard on the fronts, the rear just causes lock-up and sliding... cause most of the time your about lifting the rear off the ground going into the corner..... When it rains, I go Duck hunting..... when its sunny, I go Duc hunting... Speaking of DUCKS!!! Nutered them dogs from Washingtion!!!! |
