Default 94 marathon controller question

I just got a lifted 94 marathon, I am trying to figure out if it still has the stock controller in it. I have an 87 resistor cart and this new one seems like a different animal(electrically speaking). Is there a number or stamp I should be looking for? Is the controller in the 94 even upgradeable? All I'm looking for is a couple of mph's (ain't we all). Is changing the controller the way to get them?

It seems like the 94 is much slower than the 87, but I assume it's due to the increased tire size. It has 23's.

Thanks for any help.

If yours is like my '92 I believe if you jack it up in the back and crawl under it you can look up at the bottom of the controller and see the manufacturers tag. If it is a Curtis 1204-*** it is stock. A Alltrax AXE 4844 controller is the popular upgrade along with a complete set of 4ga power wires. The 4844 would allow you to upgrade to 42v or 48v if you decided to.

A bigger controller will increase torque more than speed. But with tires that big it is recommended. As memtioned change out all of the cables to 4g to help get the amps to the motor. You should have plenty of speed if you can just turn those big tires well. Battery Pack condition will be a major factor as well

Be warned you are about to embark on a very expensive journey (-: Voice of experience here. After you upgrade the controller and wires you are going to find the speed increase frustratingly small. The next step will be one or two more batteries or replacing all your batteries with 8v batteries. That requires a different charger. When that is not enough you will then want a different motor.

I did all the above with a D and D 170-01-01 motor that is a combination torque and slight increase in speed motor. I now go 17 mph with 20" tires but my hill climbing is much better. I am 42v. All for about $2000.00.

You can go to 48v for about the same $ you go to 42v with 2xs the increase.

The bottom of my cart is 15" off the ground (we don't need no stinkin' jack :o)
it is a Curtis 1204- something something.
Guess I better start saving my pennies.
That wife lady wants to me to put a rear seat on it, am I correct in thinking I should upgrade the wires and controller first, or can the stock setup handle the weight?

That is a good place to start. Also you will want to get a set of heavy duty rear springs for the additional weight in back.

You might explain to the wife that the stock system is already stressed to the max with the big tires .... and you need to increase power BEFORE you go adding weight and more passengers.

Exactly what I did scottyb. So, after I get her something shiny for Xmas, it's controller shopping I go.
