That baking soda costs just pennies and it neutralized the battery acid when placed on top of the batteries and wshed down the sides it travels to where your battery acid is doing it's damage to the battery frames and neutralizes the acid there too

There are alot of ways to service your cart...... you just need to figure what works best for you

No, everything has it's own seperate ground, and I was getting pack voltage with the negative end of the pack totally disconnected.
I think it will be O.K. I have always known that boiled out electrolyte would carry voltage across the battery top, just never seen such a good demonstration of it! (I will probably be a little obsessive about clean & dry batts. from here on out)
I had always heard that just washing with water without neutrlizing the electrolyte first would speed corrosion of battery racks, frame etc......but it would be a lot easier to just hose them off if that is not the case.
Russ.

I just quit using it years ago. what do you do when you spill acid on the floor of you shop scotty? do you pour water on it or baking soda? not trying to be smart but I have worked around the auto and battery business all of my life.

Golfcartfixer: I have the convertor mounted under driver's side seat.
It is raised up on 1" rubber isolators. It does get wet, but it doesn't sit in a puddle.
So...how do you clean them?
I have always used the baking soda-water, but I make sure all caps are tight and secure and carefully avoid them with the solution.
Not trying to be smart, just always looking for better ways to do stuff.
Thanks!
Every cap I've ever seen is vented.

Just be careful with the stuff. It will instantly kill the electrolyte.

Well...how old are you?
I learned to clean Batts with baking soda when I was 12 (1965) and have been a mechanic/truck/equipment operator since I was 20 (1973)
water on an acid spill will dilute it, and avoids an obvious stain by spreading it out...
The soda neutrilizes the acid and reduces a stain in that way.
Not trying to give you grief but...them's the facts.
I think I will get a set of batt. trays and isolate my tie-downs. That should
help isolate the pack from the frame a little and protect the bottoms of the batteries from the occasional stick that jumps up off the trail, and drain the
soda-water and electrolyte without contacting the frame.
Don't get mad, I might need your advise some day since I only discovered golf carts six months ago!

Not trying to start trouble with anybody here,we all have our different ways of doing things. You could always just pull out your batteries once a year and clean and paint the boxes. It could be in the winter when its not in use and you have frames that last.

Yep! you are right about painting the boxes etc.
Probably do that when I put in the trays.
Happy trails!

As far as driving your cart throught the creeks, if water is not deep you should be ok. I just got back from my deer camp and it has rained alot the past couple of weeks. Many of the trails are covered with springs where it used to be dry. I have area where I go through 200' of water maybe 6-8 inches deep. I had no problems. My cart has a 6" lift and 22" tires.
I also used to have a cart with resistors. Stay out of water if you have resistors. They will get red hot and a spray of water on them will cause an instant breakage. Seen that, done that. Happy trails.
