Re: Should I pull the trigger on a 91 Marathon
I'm really excited about this 600 find. Probably tell by my overposting here LOL but now I have to decide what should be the first thing to do. Lift and tires or upgrade the engine and wiring.Batteries are 06 exides probably need to get some kind of meter to check these. Whats everyone think?

That is one clean friggin Marathon I would set some of the money aside for new batteries, 06 on the Exides means your gonna need them with in the next year or two, assuming they have been cared for well.
That's a great cart though, Well done |

I wanna go 48v on this eventually but am hopeing my batteries last a year or two more. Anyone have an idea where I can get a service/repair manual for this cart? The ones in the sticky were for newer carts. |

Nice score. Very clean. Looks like mine when we got it.
Hope you don't have any neighbors with a gasser though. It will speed up your year or two goal with 4 yr old, 36v batteries. |

I think I am going to lift it and put bigger tires on it first. Anyone have suggestions / recommendations on lift and tires? Its mainly just a tool around the neighborhood or down the road to visit friends cart. Appreciate any input from you guys that have already gone down this road. |

Re: Should I pull the trigger on a 91 Marathon
Just my recommendation, but I'd suggest converting to 48v first. From the additional umph you then can decide what size tires & rims you want & then the lift height also.
Nice clean cart at a great price. Ross |

Re: Should I pull the trigger on a 91 Marathon
I have yet to do much with a sparky so take this for what it's worth.
It looks to me like the 48v/bigger engine upgrade is a pretty big expense. And new batteries will certainly be a good size chunk of change. The lift & tires is also a pretty penny if you go with a better lift & nicer tires. This upgrade can vary from less than $400 (for a basic block lift, 20" tires & steel wheels) to close to $1000 (for a Jake's drop axle lift, 22" tires & nice ITP aluminum wheels). So it's time to decide how far your willing to go with this project. The drop axle, ITP wheels & larger tires will definitely look & perform better. But in my book a drop axle lift doesn't give me enough improvement over a block lift (or stock) for me to dump that kind of money in this particular cart. At some point I decided to keep this project pretty low budget so that when I sell it, I don't lose my shorts. So far I'm in around $1200 or $1300. So I think I can break even when I sell. And then upgrade to a newer EZGo or Yamaha that I can put a little more money & time into, and end up with a better performer than I believe the Marathon is likely to be. Food for thought.... No doubt it's a great first cart for your first project. At some point your going to get ideas about what you do & don't need/like in a cart. This forum is a wealth of info. Use the search tool. When you see a guy's cart/avatar that you like, look thru his profile, gallery, posts & threads. You'll find a lot of good Marathon & sparky info here, some of which will apply to you, some won't. Good luck & enjoy. I'm hoping to help a neighbor out with a Marathon sparky EMP engine upgrade very soon. Might make me consider a sparky for my own next project. |
