Battery Box Leveling
I have a condition that I do not like in the cart that I just purchased. It has 4-wheeler tires installed all around, bigger on the rear than the front and has been lifted in the rear
The batteries are not level enough to suit me. I am thinking that 1/2" across the top of my battery is limiting my water levels and not giving them the capacity to rise and fall (and evaporate) with charging and heat. If I could acheave inside 1/4" I would be more comfortable. I get that the cell itself is the short way out of level, but I feel it needs correction. How much ' out of level ' is acceptable? |

Re: Battery Box Leveling
As long as the plates are not exposed and the electrolyte isn't leaking excessively from the caps, I wouldn't worry about it. If it bothers you that much, put some wood lath under the front edge of the batteries to shim them closer to level.

Re: Battery Box Leveling
If you put shims under the front of the batteries, be sure to put shims under the battery hold down bracket so the front row of batteries aren't loose.
Another option would be construct a platform whose height approximates the height difference between the front and rear tires. Then park the cart with the front wheels on it when charging and/or watering batteries. Electrolyte expansion and gassing occur while charging and the electrolyte contracts while discharging, with little if any gassing. Evaporation occurs all the time, but gassing accounts for the vast majority of water loss. Basically, the batteries are designed to tolerate being discharged while at an angle, but I' m not sure how much of an angle. My guess is that if you water them while level, they should be fine. |

Re: Battery Box Leveling
Thanks for the input. I have learned that replacement battery boxes are in the industry, mine is corroded beyond the point of trusting it to hold up for the life of a new set of batteries. Unless I miss my guess I think I will be able to get them closer to level when replacing the battery box.
I am concerned because as they are now my lower water limit is raised and upper limit is lowered, not giving me the full working range/capacity in the water level. |

Re: Battery Box Leveling
Oddly enough, battery designers put the vent well in the center of the top of the cells, which minimizes the effect of tilting.
Another thing to take into consideration is the tilt on each cell of a 6V battery is only 1/3 the tilt on the entire battery. (The tilt angle is the same, but the rise is less because the run is shorter.) So if the front of the battery is 1/2" lower than the back, the front of each cell is only 1/6" lower than the back of the same cell. Of course, if the battery was tilted side to side, the cells would have the same run and rise as the battery case. |

Re: Battery Box Leveling
Yes,yes, yes. (3 cells right) Now, I am not so worried about the level. Thank you. As I woke today I came to a similar conclusion, as your thesis states. Also, I did dream up a plan to build a bottle jack powered battery-picker to reduce my efforts in maintainence. Simply put, it is a miniture engine picker on 3" casters. I can roll each battery to a baking soda pit (an old plastic igloo cooler) at the edge of my driveway for clean up. PM (preventitive maintenance) is more about the effort that protects the money already spent and I'd sure hate to bend the titanium that holds my upper body upright.
