Default Drive Clutch Rebuild : Do I need Weights and Spring also?

Thanks to the tips on this site I was able to remove the clutch and the cover. Neither were easy. Best tip I read was mix tranny fluid and acetone to get the cover off. It's the only thing that worked and it was within 2 mins. With a puller of course.

I've never rebuilt a clutch. The buttons are worn, but not sure what else.

It dings a low speed. The clutch engages at low speed always moving the transaxle so it won't shift into gear.

Do I need new weights and a spring too?

Thanks!

Usually it's the worn buttons that make it "ding", and shift improperly,
You'll notice that the new button kit only comes with one button spring, and if you originally had 3 button springs,
Just use the one that comes with the kit, and let the other two just "flop around"... it helps with a smoother clutch engagement.
When you order the buttons, order a thrust washer also! (the big washer the the weights ride on)

If the weights aren't broken, or not visually severely worn, those should be o.k.!

As for the spring... I can't give you much info on that, I've never had to change one,
all I've ever read is if it's not broken, most of the time... they're fine!
And whatever you do... do not lube any moving parts in it, they're designed to run dry!

Hope this helps!

Learn something new every day. I have a spare clutch that I took apart, cleaned, and reassembled. Put some grease on the outside of the rubber bushings but nowhere else. Bad idea?

You must be talking about a Salisbury clutch, I don't know diddly squat about them!
the newer drive clutches don't have rubber bushings that I know of!
So I can't say if it's a bad idea or not!

I'm pretty sure they designed them to run dry because grease and oil collect dust, wearing stuff out faster!

No it was a clutch just like the one pictured. There are three of them. Maybe I shouldn't be calling them bushings (sliders maybe?).

Flip that big washer over so you can use the other side for wear

Buttons. I see they're referred to as buttons, the three (plastic maybe?) pieces in the upper left of this photo. On mine I just spread some grease on the rounded outside edges where they slide in and out of those brackets molded into the inside of the outer sheave assembly.

That works too!
I did that on my buddies 94... it was pretty worn, and I didn't think of ordering the washer when I ordered the button kit.
I just figured the OP has to get buttons anyway, so why not get a washer also!

Springbok...
I bet that a light coat of grease on the buttons won't hurt anything as long as you didn't "gob" it on!

I typically use a little dry graphite lube on the buttons. Works well.
