rear brakes on 01 EZGO
A couple of weeks ago I tried to take the rear drum off of my 01 EZGo. the center nut never did come off .Why is it so tight. Has anyone changed there brakes. I get a squeel when braking so I guess the best thing to do it have them changed. Is it had to do. ?

You MUST have the correct tools! It's not hard, but if you don't know what you're doing, then it's worth a trip to your local golf cart shop

I have plenty of tools. The local shop is 50 miles away. and no trailer to haul it in.

Re: rear brakes on 01 EZGO
That nut is torqued to 75 psi. If it is not torqued to that minimum then the axle hub will strip out pronto. Once you get the nut off you find out if the brake drum hub is rusted solid to the axle .... you got a 50/50 chance. If it is frozen then you better let somebody help! Many a drum has been broken trying to remove it.... Back the shoe adjuster off before you try to remove the drum .... I assume you have done brakes on something else before? Yes?

Soak it with PB Blaster and hit it with a 1/2" impact... can't believe a good impact won't break it loose.

Re: rear brakes on 01 EZGO
I'm just getting around to getting some parts ordered. When spring comes around I'll get my master machanic to come down to my house and do the work. A couple of years ago he switched brakes for me on my 28 ft loadrite trailer. I bought two sets of Stainless Steel brake assemblies and he took the surge brakes off and put the new brakes on for me and he only charged me $40.00 total. He has more tools then the Snap on Guy has in his mobile truck. I already spoke with him, so I know he'll do it for me. He's never worked on a golf cart yet.

Re: rear brakes on 01 EZGO
the hardest part sometomes is getting the drum off. once its off than it is like any car drum setup. very easy to do.
one thing to check is you brk cables. make sure they aren't rusted internally and sticking. This is also very common problem. |

Re: rear brakes on 01 EZGO
The nut is so tight because these carts are known to strip out the hubs. forget that 75lb stuff. I tighten them till the impact stops turnning and then some. DON'T back the nut off to install the cotter pin or you'll be on the way to getting new hubs when those stip out.
