Wiring in a relay to activate separate circuit

Correct. The third position on that ignition switch is a simple single pole switch. It would pass power to the relay, the relay turns on, and the current can now be distributed to the 12v item(s) via the relay.

I guess I assumed that there would be 36v coming off all the outs on the switch, and thus the need for a 36v relay

But it sounds like the 3rd position isn't a full 36v?

Not doubting it would work just trying to wrap my head around it!

Keep in mind there is no voltage on that second circuit inside the 3-position keyswitch unless YOU send it there. It is segregated from the 36v cart control circuit completely.

There are 2 seperate electrical switches operated by the same key. The circuits are isolated 100%. You can do this mod. It is easy. You can prove everything I said with a multimeter. In fact, you should. It would be a great way to learn about your cart. After this mod, controllers and solenoids are easy!
