Project
Just got home from checking out a couple carts I found in a Craig's list ad. They were about 50 miles from me and it was getting dark so I didn't have a lot of time to check them out. Ad said "The Yamaha is a 4 cycle and doesn't run. Don't know the year because I cant read the tag. The EZ-GO is a 2 cycle and has a blown piston. Model # 79F20."
So I headed out. Found the Yamaha to be a G2. Body plastic is very good. Has headlight/taillight kit added, no tears or rips in seats. Tires are in good shape. Has frame for top. Actually it is in better shape than my lifted G2! Didn't get a chance to look at the engine other than to see it looks to be all there. EZ-GO has the engine out and sitting in the guy's shop --- with a broken piston skirt. The body seems to be solid and complete. It was getting dark so I really didn't spend more than just a few minutes looking at both carts and paid the guy what he was asking. I winched the Yammy into the bed of my Dodge and will go back for the EZ-GO tomorrow after church. I'm sure I will be asking for advice and help on these two projects --- might part the EZ-GO out or just try to fix it. I'll probably switch the new Yammy parts onto my lifted cart ... I've been thinking about getting headlights and replacement seats for it anyway. Cost? For both carts ... $100! I think I got a pretty good deal. :-) |

Re: Project
Hopefully will get some pics today or tomorrow. I'm still waiting for daylight so I can see the G2 and see what I really hauled home! Haven't even got it out of the pick-up yet.

Re: Project
I've been waiting for the rain to let up so I can get a decent picture or two, but the weather hasn't kept me from messing around with the new G2. I do wish I had a shop though. :-(
Anyway, I checked the oil, drained the old gas, added a gallon of fresh fuel, checked the plug and hooked up a (temporary) marine battery (the only "spare" I have right now). Don't have a key so I jumped the switch, pulled the choke and the engine turned right over! :-) Not really sure if it's firing or not (my hearing isn't real good) but it seems like it is. Won't move in either forward or reverse. :-( Don't know if the belt is too loose, the clutch is slipping terribly, or what. I'm not a mechanic, so will someone please suggest what I should do next? Are there tests I should be doing? Some ways to tell if it is really firing or not? Maybe I should just keep it running/turning over until the muffler gets warm? What should I do about getting it moving? How do I narrow the possible problems down? The belt is loose, but I don't think it is any looser than my good G2 --- how can I check it? I'm still happy with the cart as I only have $50 into it, but I would be even happier if I could get it running decently. I'm open to any reasonable/decent ideas and suggestions. I get enough of the other kind from the locals! |

Re: Project
Take off the seat of your (running) G2, put it in neutral, start it and watch the clutches articulate. The new ones clutches should mimic it. (Clutches have a zirk fitting on each one, and need a shot of grease in each one). It would be a whole lot easier if the key switch worked on the new one. Then you would know that the ignition should be getting juice.
Read around on here. There are many threads that pertain to your problem. Read the owners manual sticky,(above) about maintenance. That will be most of your problem. The more you read, the more you will find out about these things, and have both of them running like a top!! I think all G2 keys are alike. If the motor doesn't come up off idle, its probably not running. |

Re: Project
Here are some pics of my $50 Yamaha G2. Tomorrow I'll get a new sparkplug, check to see if I'm getting fuel to the carb and whatever else I come up with to try to get it running. Sounds like it wants to start, anyway.
