Also is there a rule of thumb for tightening the batteries. I don't want to over tighten or pull the stud through the lead but I don't want it loose either.

here's some info, the washers is not going to change anything, they will always loosen up because of getting hot and cooling off again, the washers just give another place for corrosion to build up
