Default steering shaft

I have an old electric cart about a 71. The steering shaft came out hard and I need to know if the end is still ok to use. The shaft is solid steel on the spline end and the is hollow until the bottom witch has a key in to fit in a slot in the steering assembly. It just slides down into the steering column and slips in this slot and the top of the column has a retaining collar that holds the shaft down.
