Default To charge or not to charge

That is the question. New batts in my ezgo. Some say run them down before I charge, some say charge after every drive. What do the experts here say?

Thanks!

RUN AWAY from the person who says run them down Here is the scoop:

NEW BATTERIES=
Yes that is normal.... let the charger finish and check the voltage 30-45 minutes after the charger shuts off ... you should have a reading like on the chart below. During the first 12 cycles it is important to always let the charge finish and do not draw the pack down below say 75% capacity..... then never below 50% during their useable life. If you do this they will last about twice as long as an abused set

A note for everyone ...... lead acid golf cart batteries do not have a memory like your old cel phone batteries..... there is no reason to ever draw them down below the 50% capacity mark on the chart posted above.... do so repeatedly can do permanent damage resulting in a diminished useful life

80% premature failures of batteries is sulfation; the build up of lead sulfuric crystals on the plates of the battery. The crystals build up on the plates which add resistance. Eventually the resistance becomes high enough the battery cannot take a charge.

The sulfation process is accelerated by leaving the battery in a discharged state or taken below 50% DOD. Therefore to maximize battery life you charge it after any use, never discharge more than 50%, and if stored leave the battery on a FLOAT TYPE voltage charger or at least top off every couple of weeks with a constant current type to keep it fully charged while in storage.

always charge them before you go for a drive. It should take no more than 1-2 hours to fully charge the pack. I usually let the charger cut off and than unplug and replug to turn charger back on. This makes sure the pack is fully charged.

Thanks for all the replies. It was my thinking that like a car battery, the pack should not be allowed to get to low on charge. Great info sunking, now I have some great technical terms to throw around during the debate.
