Default Battery melt

Has anyone ever seen this happen before?

It might be difficult to ascertain from this pic, but the negative post melted clean off as is evident from the spatter on the battery case.

Could the grounds be somehow arcing? I have a 12v accessory battery that's ground to the frame in a different spot, could this be the cause? The only apparent damage at this point is the obvious damage to that particular battery and the fact that the cart wont run. Any ideas? Suggestions?

someone with a lot more knowledge then me will come a long, but I do know a loose cable/connection can do it. Also someone will have to verify, but I am pretty sure I have read that you should not use the frame for a ground on a electric cart.

I'm a rookie here but what Ive learned from this site is that nothing is suppose to be grounded to the frame on a ele cart. I have a assce battery also for my radio and I put the wires on a aligator clips both pos and neg so I can disconnect quickly, so that memory want pull any juice while im not useing it it doesnt take just a few seconds to reset the radiO. the melt down also could have come from a loose conection. The connection was bad. You have to check connections at least once a month. You can fix it, see here. http://www.buggiesgonewild.com/batte...nal-repair.php

Do NOT ground to frame on an electric cart. It doesn't matter if its an accessory battery or the pack.

That can be repaired, I have only used bolts and have never had a problem, but what ever works.

This happened last night when I went for a quick drive up the street. I got about 1/2 mile away from my house and was going up a pretty steep hill. It was the first time I'd taken the cart up this particular hill, and it was struggling. The hill is about 1/8 mile long and about 100 feet from the top the cart lost any drive power. A small amount of smoke did come from under the cart, but it was too dark to see the root of it at that point.
It wasnt until today, after reading almost every thread on all the potential problems I might be facing that I decided to lift the seat again...

So, you're saying that the battery can still be used after replacing the stud? I shouldnt be worried about internal damage or anything?

And I was hoping to use this as an excuse to buy all new batteries, cables, a new controller and motor upgrade. I spent all day trying to justify these things as "necessities" to the wife. Now, how am I (in good conscience) supposed to stay that course.

On a side note, I have another question... on second thought, I'll start a new thread.

thanks.

What ever you do, replace ALL the 6g cables with 4g welding cable with copper lugs. The cables that are on your cart now are junk.

Yep, just tell her you need to replace all the batteries, but since your are doing that, just tell her this is the perfect time to replace those other things you mentioned or questioned in the other thread. Cuz you don't to tear it apart twice.....I don't think it will work, but you can try
