Anyone have luck sanding the bumpers smooth?
Alright, I am trying to smooth out the textured bumpers and front fascia on my club car precedent . I have seen and read of others doing this, but It is just not working out for me. I'm trying to get them smooth, so I can paint them to match the body.
I started with a 180grit and I just wasn't getting anywhere, so I went down to a 100 grit and that was a mistake, because the plastic started getting "hairs". I also tried using a filling primer, thinking I could go heavy with it and sand it smooth, but that didn't really work well either. Any suggestions? I may just keep the textured look and throw down some paint, but that is not what I was really trying to go for. |

Re: Anyone have luck sanding the bumpers smooth?
Any thoughts on painting on a thin coat of fiberglass resin to fill the texture and then sanding?

Re: Anyone have luck sanding the bumpers smooth?
I just did a precedent and sanded the hell out of it with a LOT of primer and it came out real nice!

Re: Anyone have luck sanding the bumpers smooth?
So just for the info, In case someone else is looking to do the same thing. I wound up using a fiberglass resin by Bondo.
It went on easy with a brush and I had to go back over a second time to fill in a few small gaps that opened up, but it was pretty easy. It dries hard in about an hour and half and then you can sand away. I started with a 100 grit to grind down the large wavy areas and then moved to a 220 and then a 400. They are a few small holes that opened up when I was sanding, so I am going to hit it with a couple coats of filling primer then sand again. Overall a much easier way to smooth out the textured plastic than just sanding the plastic. |

Re: Anyone have luck sanding the bumpers smooth?
I would have thought a couple of coats of 2K hi build primer would have done the trick. Southern poly urethanes sells a really good primer that fills nicely and sands pretty easy. I wouldn't use lacquer primer or any type of spray can primer.
