2004 Yamaha G22? Just purchased, needs oomph. What can I do?
So I found this on Letgo, made the guy a lowball offer and he accepted it.
Cart runs fine, goes forward, backward, brakes, the whole 9 yards. Thing is, it has no oomph. Going up a small hill and it drops to a crawl. Seller said he had it several years and never replaced the batteries, so I expect that is the issue BUT Could it also be something else? If so, what? Anyway to check before buying new batteries? Any recommendations on battery type, size, brand, etc? Seems like there are 6 regular size 12 volt batteries and then a smaller size one, is that a 6v? Why the little one? It came with no title but I got a bill of sale and it was registered last in 2015 (as per the registration that he did have) so it was street legal. Finally, he was asking 2600, I offered 1500, he said yes. Good deal? |

The six batteries are probably 8Volt. The smaller one is probably a 12V aux battery. Looks like it's in good condition. You probably do need batteries though. A 48V cart usually runs 6 batteries 8V each or 4 batteries 12V each. The 6x8 is a better combination.

Best are probably Trojan T-875. These are 8V so you need 6 of them. That other thing in your pictures doesn't look like a battery to me. You have 6 x 8V batteries now.

Re: 2004 Yamaha G22? Just purchased, needs oomph. What can I do?
I’d recommend diagnosing the cart before spending any money on anything. Hook a multimeter to the main pack positive and negative terminals. It should read around 48 volts judging by the charger.
For reference, 50.9 volts is considered a full charge on a 48 volt pack. This measurement is taken once it reaches full charge, then the charger is disconnected. Wait 12 hours. See what the voltage reads. Then take it for a drive. Let us know what voltage drops to under load and after a mile or two driving. Before dropping a grand on batteries, make sure they’re actually bad first. |

A good cart service can load test your batteries too. THe ones you have are probably AGM since they don't have caps to add water. I don't like them. You should look to see if there are any date codes on them. Batteries are only good for about 4-5 years.

Re: 2004 Yamaha G22? Just purchased, needs oomph. What can I do?
Something is very wrong with this. There is no possible way that's a G22, 100% impossible. So many things wrong, wrong motor type (36v series motor), wrong battery tray, wrong controller type & location wrong brake pedal, wrong steering column, wrong dashboard. This is just things I can see from the pictures, I could tell you lots of other things it will have that a G22 shouldnt.
That cart is one of these three things, a G8, a G14, or a G16. (I'm leaning towards G8, by the look of the tear body, and the back of the F&R switch). This also prevents your cart from being newer than 2001 at best, about 1991 at worst. Your serial number might be under the seat on a vertical bar below the seat hinge points. You got a misrepresented cart. |
