no spark at spark plug
What I am looking for is information on how to test my pulsar coil, ignitor, and ignition coil. The reason being my cart does not have any spark at the spark plug. The cart has a 2 stroke engine and is a vintage mid to late 80s.

Re: no spark at spark plug
Get out the Multimeter !!! Your coil should ohm out at 2.8-4.3ohms between the 2 wires going in (disconnect it first, then test the leads) ... Pulsar should read between 65-90 ohms between the red and blue wires (again, disconnect it first) ... Unfortunately, there's no way to test the ignitor other than replacing it with a new, or known working one.
(On the upside though, if everything tests OK and you suspect the ignitor, it's a cheap $30 project to convert it to an HEI module - look up "HEI conversion" here on the forums) |

Re: no spark at spark plug
My ignition coil checks out good, but my pulsar coil ohms out at 149 ohms. I reckon this is not good. I do notice 2 beeps on my ohm meter, about 10 degrees apart on crankshaft rotation when I turn the engine over by hand. Is this normal?

Re: no spark at spark plug
The two beeps are the forward and reverse lobes for the pulser coil

Re: no spark at spark plug
gdunn is correct and my pulsar (which runs fine) reads 140 ohms. If you are sure that the coil is good and all your connections are corrosion free it looks like you might be performing the conversion to HEI

Re: no spark at spark plug
Hey Dave (not to threadjack, sorry) - my pulsar ohms out at around 150 also, however when I rotate the engine I'm not getting any change throughout the cycle, my DMM doesn't have an audio feature but wouldn't you assume it would either spike or drop the reading(s) at the magnet(s) on the rotor?

Mine shows a spike but it is hard to hold the exact spot to get any kind of reading. The meter just seems to fluctuate

Re: no spark at spark plug
That is why they call it a PULSAR coil. You only get a pulse. Actually it is the same concept as an engine with a set of points and condenser. While the engine is rotating, the metal closes a HALL EFFECT TRANSISTOR that charges a capacitor. When the slot on the flywheel comes by, the hall effect opens and the capacitor discharges to the IGNITOR.
An old dwell meter will tell you if it is opening and closing. |

Re: no spark at spark plug
The pulsar produces a/c voltage when the engine is turning. So disconnect it and hook your volt meter up set to 5 volt a/c and spin the engine over it should produce about 1/2 to 1 volt a/c. If it does it's good if it doesn't it's bad.I don't ohm the out at all just do the a/c check. This is a positive check of its functionality.
