The spring between the cable stop and the throttle lever must be compressed when there is no pedal pressure or the cart will backfire. If it not compressed it will backfire. Loosen the cable stop, use it to compress the spring about 1/2 way and while compressing the spring tighten the cable stop.

The without the key on, depress the pedal slowly and watch the throttle lever. It should stay closed while the accelerator cable is moving away from the throttle lever. If the throttle lever immediatly moves with the cable it is not compressed enough and the cart will backfire.

just like gotee said, and make sure "with the key off" that you hear the micro switch click before the throttle linkage moves

It is as I thought . . . there is no spring between the cable stop and the throttle lever. The cable stop is up against the throttle lever and as soon as you depress the acc pedal the throttle lever starts to move.

I took it for a little drive down to the dock and got a few backfires (as expected.)

I visit my local guy and since he has another '86 sitting there for parts I can point that spring out. I suspect he will know exactly what you're saying.

Thanks again.

Totally newbie here...only been under the seat to add gas until it started backfiring and losing power Tuesday night.

Is that air supply hose you are talking about hooked up to the carb and just hangs down loose attached to nothing? Curious as I have a smaller hose (looks more like an air line for a fish tank air pump) coming off of the carb that just droops down. It isn't in the way of anything but I also couldn't see anything to hook it up to on the other end.

The lose end was all blackened up and stiff. I couldn't bend over far enough to see if it was plugged but did manage to snip off the end and found out it was clear
Mine is a 1986 ezgo.

The little tube appears to be an overflow. That is not the air duct I was referring to.

Back to the spring, I stopped by my local guy's used cart place today. He had two old EZGos sitting there. One had the spring where it is shown here and the other had a spring where they cable housing was fastened to the little metal bracket. Both did the same thing.

He dug me a up a similar spring, much lighter weight then the one pictured here, and I have added it as y'all instructed. When I depress the accelerator now there is some delay before the throttle lever starts moving.

Thanks.

(But my dog still will not go near the cart )

Will any spring work as long as it's not to big? My 86 Marathon doesn't have a spring on the cable but does have one on the carb and it hooks to the throttle and it's wore out. Mine surges on take off and backfires.

My guy here doesn't carry em and said use any spring. Then he went to his spring drawer and I picked one out. It's flimsier than the one in the picture here, but the closest match.

Ace Hardware or Lowes or Home Depot will have springs in their specialty aisle, so I bet you could find one to match this picture.

Oh Yeah, where ya at in Missouri?
