Pulser coil ohm question
So according to the trouble shooting flow chart, the pulser Coil continuity test is resistance 75 ohms.
If it measures 150, does this mean its shot? |

Re: Pulser coil ohm question
Hey,
The technicians manual say the resistence is 20- 25 ohms on the 200 or 300 ohm scale on the VOM. That's a bench test, motor off. Check it again. The two leads to the plug to the pulser coil. Outside of that range is no good! |

Re: Pulser coil ohm question
It reads 150.9 so that must be the cause of my "no spark" issue.
Thanks so much. |

Re: Pulser coil ohm question
Hey toomey, it seems to me the pulser coil is nothing but a pulse generator. Being a pulse generator it should produce AC voltage when the engine is cranked.Probably .5 volts AC or more. I use this method to identify bad pulse generators on cars all the time. Good luck and I hope this info helps.

Re: Pulser coil ohm question
Thanks for the advice Chardonite.
I hooked up the AC tester to the Pulser coil leads and cranked it. It showed 0 volts. That pretty much verifies my conclusion that the pulser is toast. |

Re: Pulser coil ohm question
Nope he stated that if it reads outside of the 20 -25 range it can be bad

Re: Pulser coil ohm question
OK - not to throw in contradicting info, but I have done a ton of the two strokes and I have experienced OHM readings as low as 60 and as high as 165 on perfectly good pulsars (I've had brand new ones that read 130+) ... As to AC voltage, generally a good pulsar will give You in the neighborhood of .8-1.4VAC while cranking.
That said, zero VAC is bad. 25ohms is bad. Personally, I'd pull the flywheel and inspect it - I have had 2 carts in the last few years that had physically damaged pulsars (likely from debris working its' way behind the flywheel) that wouldn't generate anything AC-wise but ohm'd out good (You wanna talk some real puzzling troubleshooting, LOL). The basic premise was that the pulsars were cracked and hanging to where they couldn't produce voltage off the magnet on the flywheel, but they were still "Intact" internally so from the lead wires they both gave the readings and impression of being just fine. |
