Re: 1987 EZGO gas backfire issue
I picked up a throttle stop spring and adjusted to your guys recommendations. The micro switch seems to be working fine. The throttle opens at about 1-2 inches of peddle travel (after micro switch kicks on) and closes fully on deceleration. The cart works fine 80% of the time. It's really strange because I can can ride around flat area and off road all day long at full throttle then let off quick and then throttle again and no backfire. Every once in a while I will get a very small poof. The second I drive up the 1/8 mile fairly steep hill and then turn around and come down it does it (big bang). If I trail break and keep a little throttle I can persuade it to stay quiet. When I purchased the cart the guy said to use a 50:1 fuel mixture which I now realize is too rich. I am sure they did that for quite a few years. Would that have anything to do with it? Any other ideas? Thanks.

Re: 1987 EZGO gas backfire issue
I'm with popatop it sure sounds like you have an air leak somewhere. Check the screw they used to block off the old oil pump-Take the air filter off the carb to conform the throttle plate or butterfly is completely closed. If there is a throttle stop screw back it off so the plate is closed when off peddle. If its open just a bit it will cause this. As stated you must have fuel and air for it to run any air leak and POW. Good Luck

Re: 1987 EZGO gas backfire issue
I worked on the cart quite a bit yesterday but the backfire is still around. I took off the new carb to verify the butterfly is fully closing, installed a new throttle cable, installed the correct throttle stop spring, and the micro switch definitely activates prior to the throttle opening. I searched but really have no idea where the oil pump use to be (anyone have any pics?). I plan on removing the header and muffler this afternoon to check for blockages and/or leaks. I have some new gaskets to install as well. Is there anything else I should do while I am at it? Thanks.

Re: 1987 EZGO gas backfire issue
The second I drive up the 1/8 mile fairly steep hill and then turn around and come down it does it (big bang). Going up hill probably means that you are using full throttle and not all of the gas is being burnt. At the top of the hill you back off and the engine make a few revoultions which pumps that excess fuel into the header. If I trail break and keep a little throttle I can persuade it to stay quiet. With a little throttle you are keeping the spark plug firing so there is no accumulation of fuel to explode. When I purchased the cart the guy said to use a 50:1 fuel mixture which I now realize is too rich. I am sure they did that for quite a few years. Yes indeed all that oil has certainly collected in your muffler. As you are going to take them off I would light a big old fire and roast both the header and the muffler for 30 minutes. You will know when they cooked as jets of flame will shoot out of each end.

Re: 1987 EZGO gas backfire issue
Thanks Dave. Baking it now...Lots of smoke but no flames after 30. The spark plug was wet and dark brown so I replaced that. Fresh 128:1 mixture in it too.

Re: 1987 EZGO gas backfire issue
Got everything back together and took it for ride. It ran awesome (23 mph) and didn't back fire until the very end. I thought it was gone and then boom. Back to the drawing board. Any ideas? Thanks.

Re: 1987 EZGO gas backfire issue
if its backfiring thur exhaust thats in most cases when you let your foot off gas the butterfly in carb isn,t closing at the exact same time so try adjusting that cable ...other than that its the crank seals that will cause a backfire.......try spraying carb cleaner right on seals while running engine see if it changes...................................

Re: 1987 EZGO gas backfire issue
Does it help to gently ease off the throttle as you come to a halt or does it always backfire no matter what you do?
Can you drive it without the header on without annoying the neighbors? I know it will be very noisy but wonder if this is fuel accumulating in the header. Dave |

Re: 1987 EZGO gas backfire issue
Yes, as long as I gently ease of the throttle it does much better. There did seem to be some fuel at the header. The gasket itself was wet. The neighbors will probably have the cops over if I drive it without the header. As previously mentioned, I can drive around the backyard and try to make it backfire and it never does. Getting frustrated...I don't have a problem driving it to prevent the boom but it's a little embarrassing for others when they drive it. Thanks again for all your help.
