sorry I didnt introduce myself yet... Yesterday I was researching golf carts all day. And I want to buy a club car and get it to go 50+ MPH. I thought fixing up a golf cart would be more fun than getting a dune buggy.

Now, we should get back on topic.

So, when you switch engines like this, what do you... do? As in, when you change the engine, what else comes along that you need to do?

I bought a project cart that someone started putting a Rotax in. They screwed up so I got it cheap. I spent some time talking to my neighbor about snowmobile engines and he gave me some great tips. He has racing sleds and works on them a lot...
He said you need the side of the pully (clutch) closest to the motor to line up with the side of back pully when it is all the way open. This is the first mistake on mine... Also, you need to mount the motor the same way it was in the sled as in in the carbs were on top they need to be that way when its in your cart or the carb wont work. Cooling can be an issue as some snowmobile motors were fan cooled, so you may need vents throught the body and or a cooling fan. Mount the engine well as it will be working hard and you don't want it flying loose under your seat, and mount it so it will work with a normal sized belt(really tight). Lastly he said you will need a fuel pump from a sled.
My cart has every one of these things wrong :-) so I have my work cut out for me...

Nice job hound. Have you had that old cat clutch apart? The spyders that the weights and rollers spin on will wear and break, not to hard to work on just should be looked at now and then.

Talking Re: snowmobile engine swap?

I new to this site as of 2/18/2009 I have a 1994 easy go with a liquid cooled 500 cc snowmobile engine, I have to add reverse so I bought a 4 stroke rear end. and adding electric start so I bought a clutch with a ring gear and a starter. so my question is exhaust.... Mine has a snowmobile tuned pipe on it now and It is way to loud because it dosnt start moving untill 4000 rpm.... what are your thoughts of taking that muffler off and adding a straight pipe to a car muffler with a smaller opening out the tail pipe to create back pressure?
