1990 ezgo only goes fast

Hello. I just bought a 1990 ezgo for hauling feed around the farm. I've never drove one before. I'm assuming this isn't normal. You have to floor it for it to run. If you let up on gas at all it stalls. It goes way too fast about 20mph and no other speed at all. That's too fast to run around chickens. Is this the way they are? It's either 0 speed or fast. Thanks.

No, it's not normal. Is it a 2 stroke, or 4 stroke engine?
I just don't see a 2 stroke hitting 25mph. Even with big tires.

It's a 2 stroke. It's about 20 sorry I typod.

The carburetors have no adjustment. There are fixed low speed, and high speed jets.

I suspect that your low speed jet is clogged. Your carburetor needs a super duper cleaning which includes taking out the center brass stem.

Or the cable is adjusted wrong or sticking.

I was thinking the throttle plate could be stuck open, but then throttle position wouldn't make a difference. The pedal microswitch could be out of adjustment.

When you let off the gas, and it dies, does it backfire when you step on the gas again?

That was my first thought. IF the carb is half opened when the microswitch engages, it's gonna take off. no slow speed settings there.

Those do have that funky little metal link rod between the governor and the throttle as well. If that is stuck or jammed funny, it will also not be happy.


Easiest fix is probably to make sure the throttle cable operates smoothly, and run it straight to the carb, bypassing the governor all together. quick, easy, and free

no it doesn't

My first thoughts, although you guys have already covered it very well.......

Since it goes 20mph I'd guess the Gov is already disconnected, a broken throttle cable would put it in wfo all the time. But I'd think it would backfire at start up.....

So, like said above perhaps out of adjustment throttle cable or micro switch is where I'd start
