Default 1997 workhorse questions

Hi, I just purchased a 1997 workhorse and I have a couple questions.

First, it has a clutch chatter when taking off. I'm thinking I need to pull the clutch and go through it. maybe new bushings and washers?

This cart will only run 9 to 10 mph on the governor. The clutches seem to be going to the highest gear.
Is it geared that low ?

I also noticed there is a lot of rotational play in the transaxle when I turn the driven pulley. Is that normal?

It does have the 295 engine.

Thanks

I believe the issue might be the drive clutch

They are tough to get off without removing the engine. You can remove the cover bolts and cover while still on the engine. There are weights in there that stick plus a spring
Does the drive clutch go in and driven clutch go out when you speed it up ? You can jack it up to see but make sure you got it on stands.
I have rebuilt several driven clutches. Drive clutches don't mess up much

They do move through the range when it's jacked up. I was thinking maybe it needed a good cleaning on the surface that it slides on to move in and out.

I am more concerned with the play in the transaxle at the moment. Any input on that ?

May be asking the obvious, but what kind of shape is the belt in?

I think I found a problem. I read online that the driven clutch halves should be spring loaded to each other. Mine don't seem to be. I will need to pull the clutch to be sure.

I was told that the driven clutch has a power spring. The previous owner also gave me the stock spring if I want to put it back.

When you twist the driven clutch with your hand grabbing it where the belt runs on each side it should be sort of hard to do.

If its easy then you got to rebuild it.

You have to compress the spring using some sort of press and remove the lock. I got a tool to do that with. Don't let that thing hit you in the face after you remove the lock because its got some pressure on it.

You have to clock the spring with you put things back. 120 degrees the best I remember . Spring goes in center hole. There are three ramp buttons that wear. Also where the belt runs wear. Look at this close

Thanks for the help. I am hoping to tear it down next week and see about rebuilding it. Is there a bushing in the clutch that I need to replace or just the ramp buttons ?
