Possible Electrical Short?

The charger has no brain ... it is only a transformer... the Onboard Computer does all the voltage testing and regulating of the charger.. if there is a problem with the charging system it is likely in the OBC.....

Well, that ain't good! The OBC is probably expensive but I will load the cart and take it to a Club Car dealer. (The closest one is 85 miles away but they are reputable)

Well, It has been almost a month since I started trying to figure out why th charger on my 06 Club Car would not shut off. I replaced the OBC today and quess what! Same problem! Will charge down to about 4 or 5 amps and continue to charge.

Any one with an idea as to what to do next? Scottyb? Gerry?

That is the battery pack negative cable ..... it does run though the 'onboard computer' so that is the brain for the charging system..... that is what that is all about

You either have a bad obc or a bad battery..... it is easy to eliminate the possibility of a bad battery
Get yourself a simple temperature adjusting hydrometer at the local auto Zone or whatever and give us some readings on those batteries 1 hour after you unplug the eternal charger....

I replaced the OBC, yesterday, with a new one. Today after I took the readings, I went back and disconected the fuse link (It has a clear cover)
that is located on the charging recepticle and cleaned the post as well as the wire connection that I did not replace yesterday. I actually took the fuse link completely off, which made it easier to clean. I did put it back in place and tightened the connections. I rode the cart for about 40 minutes this afternoon and noticed that when I plugged in the charger, the charger needle jumps backwards, comes back up to zero and sits there. The charger is making a slight noise that tells me that it is on but I feel like that it is not charging.

I have an 06 IQ Club Car. The batteries are 08s. I recently purchased thi cart, so I don't know it's history. The problem started when the charger would charge down to about 4 or 5 amps but would never cut off. I checked the batteries with a hydrometer after it had been off charge for 1 hour.

Here are the readings from the batteries:
1. 1.100 1.150 1.150 1.100

2. 2.220 2.250 2.250 2.220

3. 2.250 2.250 2.220 2.220

4. 1.100 1.100 1.150 1.100

5. 2.250 2.250 2.220 2.250

6. 1.150 1.150 1.150 1.100

Mitchell it looks like your batteries are weak. Specific Gravity (SG) readings of 1.10 are below acceptable levels.... I am sorry to hear you replaced the obc with no effect. I thought you were taking the cart to a dealer? What did the dealer say about this problem? Take a look at the chart below for acceptable SG levels. Anything below 50% is not good for a GC battery... This will cause your charger to not shut off.... as the obc will not shut it off until it reads a preset amount of voltage in the pack, which I think you are not reaching...

Thank you for the info. I took the cart to a local cart shop. He checked the voltage in each battery after being off of charge for a little over one hour. The voltage in each battery was 8.23 or higher. I guess that he didn't check the battieries with a hydrometer. He determined that the OBC was bad because the charger would not shut off and the battery light on the dash would not come on when the batteries were very weak. (I should have made that 80 mile trip to the dealer!)

Are you surprised that 08 batteries are this weak? What do you think about the charger acting up?
