Default Hard to start

Cart kept in cold garage and haven't started the cart in over a month. Had to use a little starting fluid. also had lots of fumes. Might have been all the stop and starts pulling the kid in the snow.

Anyway is this normal for this weather? (starting fluid and exhaust fumes)

Hard to start, yes. the engines are rather cold natured. starting fluid, no. If you let them sit for a month or so, it'll have to pump gas from the tank which takes awhile. I'd check the plugs and make sure those are nice and clean, they get dirty fairly quick. Maybe check the valve adjustment, if it hasn't been done in a while it might need it.

New plugs at the begining of last summer. Guess it is time for a change. I've read about the valve adjustment but don't have the nerve to do it myself. Is it easy enough for a moderately talented person to do?

I've always done it cold, I guess it depends on who you talk to, I don't like messing with hot engines. It's so simple to do, make sure cam lobe is facing down on the valve your adjusting, loosen nut, screw in adjuster till it just touches the cam, back off 1/4 of a turn and lock it down. repeat on next valve. I never use a feeler gage, it's a PIA to get one in there but you have to make sure the adjuster just barely hardly touches the cam before backing off. It's easy to go past that point cause the springs are pretty light and don't offer much resistance.

I found on mine that the pulse hose that connects to the bottom of the fuel pump, had frozen dirt and condensation in the lowest place. Pulled it off at both end cleaned it out and it fired right up.

if the valves do need adjustment could that explain some of my oil consumption problem?

Not really, the seals don't really go bad on the heads. How much oil?

This goes back to summer so it may not be totally accurate.

1/2 quart after a couple of weekends of heavy use by the kids.
