Default Secondary driven clutch disassembly

I am trying to change out the spring in the secondary or driven clutch on a 98 ezgo. I have the clutch out of the cart, and was able to get the snap ring off. The spring cup is not budging.I have had penetrating oil on for several days now to no avail. Am I missing something? I thought once the snap ring was removed the cup would come off with ease. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Rusted
Get something that wont damage the splines and tap it out of the helix.

I recently went through the same ordeal, make sure you still have something to keep the helix/cup somewhat in place. If it were to come loose you could hurt yourself. I ended up using a rubber mallet on it and just kept working on it. In the end it came loose, I spent several different days working on it. When you put is back together put some anti seize on it in case you decide to change the spring settings in the rear.

Careful it is wound (clocked) against that spring. Do yourself a favor and mark with a sharpie the relation of the helix to the sheave and also note which direction the wind is so when you get the spring in you can re clock it correctly. Not putting the correct pre-tension can result in it not working as you'd like. (too much wind results in delayed or no upshifting and too little will open the sheave too prematurely resulting in crap low end and not downshifting properly) You'll need to hold down the helix and take some of the weight off the spring as you tap it with a rubber mallet. When it lets go you'll know it.

Thanks guys. Sounds like i just need i need to keep at what i was doing. Penetrating oil and tapping. Wanted to make sure there wasnt something i was missing. I do have it in the press to catch the force of the spring when it comes loose. Also thanks Johnny, hadnt thought of that, and will do.

I usually put a rope through mine to prevent an accident.. As noted above, that cam is under a lot of clocked spring pressure... After installing the rope through the hole the shaft went through, pull it snug and tie a knot in it so it will catch the cam when it frees up. Twist the sheaves opposite from each other and tap on the cam. A rubber mallet is preferable but not a must... Just know that the assembly is all aluminum and will break easily if a ball peen hammer is used.. It will come off, just give it some time and patience.

I just did this on my 87. I put it in the press, and removed the two piece snap ring. Never saw one of those before. After releasing pressure, the spring didn't have enough oomph to push everything apart. I tried a little tapping, and penetrating oil to no avail.

After about 2 minutes of that, I went straight to the three jaw puller. It fit perfect, and popped the spring cup right off. After cleaning the shaft, I could see that the splines are tapered. That's why it was stuck after pressing down on the cup.

I also noticed that my spring isn't clocked. It's flat on both ends, and rides on some Teflon washers.
The reason I took the clutch apart is that the rivets holding the forward pressure plate to the hub were completely sheared. My plate was flopping.

I was able to remove the old rivets, and then rivet it back together with 3/16" monel rivets. I was also able to fill the slotted holes in the plate with the bucked tail of the rivets. I'm pretty confident that it will hold for a good long time. If it doesn't, the next step will be to drill new holes between the existing holes, and install titanium Hi-Loks.

Assembly was pretty quick. I sprayed everything with graphite lube, and had to put it in the press again to reinstall that weird retaining ring. I've been pounding around the yard with it all day with no problems. It was a good experience, and I now have a much better understanding of that particular clutch.
