Default 1999 ST350 - Engine Miss at Higher RPMs

Got a '99 ST350 workhorse with 2-cyl 4-stroke Robin 350 pre-MCI engine. It starts and runs perfectly as long as rpm's are below about 1200. Above that it misses and backfires. It's getting plenty of fuel (closing the choke when it starts to miss doesn't help).

I haven't been able to find much on the internets about igniters. I tried 2 "eBay-special" igniters, but neither would work at all (even though wiring was exactly the same as original). Luckily got my $$ back for both.

I replaced coil with new aftermarket and that helped a little.

Checked pulser gap and it's in spec (0.020 - 0.039) - mine was at 0.028".

I'm at a loss as to what to try next. I really don't feel like spending $120+ on an OEM igniter without being certain that it is the problem.

I'm tempted to try one of the HEI mods I've seen mention elsewhere.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Default Re: 1999 ST350 - Engine Miss at Higher RPMs - FIXED!!

Update - Got it fixed.

Turns out it was the pulser coil.

I tested it with my voltmeter (set to AC), turned engine over and only got like 0.2 volts.

Since info on pulsers is scarce, I decided to get one and try it. Ordered one on eBay ($26). The hardest part of installing it was getting to it. It's not nearly as straightforward as the EZGO manual describes!

I'm not the worlds greatest (or fastest) mechanic. Took me 2.5 hrs to even get to the old one, 5 min to change it, and 45 min to put everything back together.

She runs like new again!!
