Help with G9e to G9a-ish Conversion
Good evening all,
I am in need of some help on a project cart that I just picked up. My previous experience is limited to cosmetic and electrical additions to an Ez Go cart some friends and I used to tool around Oklahoma State football game tailgates. That one still belongs to a friend who recently put a snow mobile motor/trans in it. On to the new project... I picked up a Yahama G9E (90% sure) that had been converted at some point from electric to gas. The old man I got this from had to replace the first engine due to failure and decided to go with a 12.5 Briggs and Stratton and accompanying trans from a riding lawn mower. This was all sorts of janky as he used a tensioner to control the drive belt from the engine to the trans and then the trans drove the differential via chain. I un-did the majority of the old man's handy work today and am at a loss on a few things. The biggest issue is the differential does not appear to be similar to the ones I am seeing as I search this site and is chain driven. There is a cover that is not shown on the attached picture that attaches to the right of the differential and the spline and sprocket are attached to the cap of cover with a cut out in the spacer between the diff and cover. Also, he decided to lift the rear suspension by flipping the rear axle and swingarm and I can't for the life of me see where to reinstall the bottom of the rear shocks once I remove the blocks that he fabricated. Parts diagrams I have seen show there are supposed to be brackets at the front of the rear axle at the collars but the ones on my cart are bent correctly but are not drilled for the shocks to be mounted. I have a line on a few engines and have been reading up on the clone engines. I have access to If anyone can give me some insight on how you'd build a cart if you started off with just a roller, I'd appreciate it. Wish list: Start with pedal HP/TQ on a budget, decent acceleration and decent mph Reverse 4-6" lift, not the lanky way it is done now Ability to run lights/radio Thanks for any comments or help. |

If it were me, I'd look for a cart that was already gas. To change the one you have the best way, you'll need a gas rear to start with. Then all the wiring will need to be added including to have a pedal start.
Way too much changing to convert. |

That rear axle is the original one for electric use. The transmission is from the riding tractor, or whatever the motor came from, not from a golf cart. This conversion plan will be difficult, because the rear frame is much different & shorter than a Gas model.

Anyone have any other unorthodox ideas to get this sucker running? How about if we toss out the need for reverse and pedal start?

To change it to gas, your going to have to get a gas rear differential to do it right. And the swingarm with the rear would be a good idea too.
There may be a way to do it using what you have, but without seeing it I don't know of any way. I've done some things that others said wouldn't work before, but I can make my own stuff a lot of the time and I have access to a lot of junk... errrrr...... treasures to pick thru that help with my projects. So unless you have fab skills, the tools to do them and a pretty good supply of scrap items, it will be way more work than you may want to get into. If you decide to go forward with it, I'm sure you'll get plenty of help here. |

The rear swingarm is shorter on the "e" model, so the swingarm from the "a" model wont help much, unless you want the rear wheels sticking Way out the back like a drag bike or hill climber.

No, WAY longer, like wheels under the rear bumper. Not near the wheel openings.
