G16 Clutch difference and removal?
I have a 97 g16 and just picked up a 96. The primary clutch that came with it looks stock but the cover looks different from my 97. I removed the cover and it looks different there too. Did the make different ones for these 2 years? Also, whats the procedure for removing the inner clutch sheave? Should I just put the long bolt in it and put a 3 jaw puller on it?

Re: G16 Clutch difference and removal?
The cover on my 97 has 3 bolts on the face that hold it on and the 96 has 3 screws on the outer edge that hold it on.

Re: G16 Clutch difference and removal?
The '96 is likely a G14, different clutch (but uses same puller bolt). I would suggest not trying the 3 jaw puller, as the center would have to go all the way through the clutch, into the end of the crank (but still avoid damaging the crank threads). The real clutch puller bolt is the best bet, and will likely save you money on broken parts that still wont come off the motor.

Re: G16 Clutch difference and removal?
It says G16 on the body. Couldnt I put the long bolt into the clutch to the crank and put the center of the jaws on that bolt and pull it off? Also the 96 clutch doesnt have a grease nipple like the 97 does and the center section that the belt rides on is 1.5" on the 96 and 1.10" on the 97.

Re: G16 Clutch difference and removal?
Ok, you have a non-yamaha clutch. The comet requires a different puller bolt. If you want to try using your 3-jaw on your clutch bolt, go for it. But i have only ever damaged clutches using 3-jaw pullers. You would be better off checking around and making your own puller bolt setup. I have done that with perfect success using stuff available from the hardware store. Or (gasp) buying one. I know that idea sucks because you cant have it right this second and costs a few $ (but the comet puller bolt is cheaper than yamaha one). Oh yeah, the clutch on that page suggested by Dave is the comet one, but the puller bolt on the same page is for yamaha oem clutch only.

Re: G16 Clutch difference and removal?
Can anyone tell me the bolt size I need to make my own? Seems really easy, might just weld some rebar to the bolt.
