Rear end / axle identification

Picked up a basket case project carryall turf 1 cart. Do. Or know year of the rear end. It needs a driverside axle. Is there a way to determine if it's a pre 96 or a 97 or later rear end?

Cart is a 97 but the rear end not with it he gave to me seperate and not sure if it's the one that went with the cart, the guy had parts all over the place.

97 and later had a large flat pad on the front where it bolts up to the back of the engine cradle. These use a clockwise rotation engine. They call it a unitized transaxle because the transmission and axle center case are designed into one.

96 and earlier do not have that, the engine and transmission do not bolt directly together. These use a counter clockwise rotation. These use the same axle center design as the electric carts usually with a Kawasaki built axle. The transmission case bolts onto the axle bell housing where an electric motor would.

It’s harder to find pictures of the older transmission setups, but pics are everywhere of the 97-up unitized axle. The difference between the two is very obvious to look at.

My buddies 94 has the flatpad, stamped steel engine cradle bolted to it... will post pics of this carryall rear end in am when I can get picture.

Are the spline counts different? That would be easiest way I'm guessing. Could just pull axle tube n check...

The input to the rear end has 12 splines. The barcode on the axle is pretty worn and hard to make out but the last numbers are "ds00"

Also doesn't anyone know the sizes for the 2 snaprings that hold the putter bearings in place? It calls for a c-clip and a retaining ring (snap ring)...

That's a 97+ Unitized transaxle (clockwise rotation), the axles are different from the pre-96 axles.
and no I don't know the size of the snap ring, all I have is the CC part#.

This is the best photo I have of my 96 transaxle. You can see two separate seams, indicating its not unitized.

96 and earlier Transmission and axle assembly. This one is a mid 80's design, but they were similar design up until 96.


If your buddy's 94 cart has a stamped engine cradle and unitized transaxle, that cart has had a motor and axle swap done. A 94 originally had a counter-clockwise rotation motor and transmission and axle assembly like the one pictured above. It's fairly common to swap the newer engine/transaxle combo into the older carts. Parts are no longer available for the old transmissions and haven't been for some time. The new engine and unitized transaxle fits in the same place, and the majority of electrical, throttle, cables, and fuel lines hook up in the same places. Just drop the old one out and bolt the new one in.
