Default ezgo marathon back gear box? question i describe in depth not sure if its gear box

(my descriptoin is confusing but please try to help).............so i recently came into a issue with my 1985 ezgo marathon.....after driving for a little while (like an hour) my cart would feel kind of like the breaks would lock up but they werent and after a few mins of sitting it would go again...its not that this few mins it wopuldnt turn over because it could but the starter which is connected to the starter belt which is connected to the clutch which is connected to the drive axle (with the belts) wouldnt move so what i was thinking is that i need to put oil into the gear box? on the back axle .. why i came to this conclusion is because when metal heats it expands which would overheat and i guess you could call it lock up because of the lack of gear oil.. this locking up could cause the breaking feeling im not shure this is it and if so what oil goes in there is it straight 90? someone please give me some insight on this and agaim sorry for the extremely confusing description

I can't say for sure, but I always use 90 weight gear oil in the rear ends of cars and trucks.Got to be better than nothing. But to check it, you remove the plug in the rear end. Then stick your finger in that hole(careful not to get stuck!)and see if you can feel oil.If you get oil on your finger, you're most likely ok.But you can fill that axle up to the level of the bottom of the plug.Anymore and it'll just run out before you can get the plug back in.
