Dumb Crank Seal Question

When installing my new crank seals, I am assuming that the flat metal (in my case - gold) portion of each seal will face outward, or away from the case/crank? I popped my old ones out when tearing down the case, and didn't look too closely at the direction the seals were seated. They were all gummed up with crud, that much I remember.

You guessed right. The lip is on the outside.
