Yamaha G9 Secondary Sheave re-install
Can someone tell me how many revolutions I have to turn the Sliding sheave when I reinstall it for the preset spring tension. When I removed it the sliding sheave unwound to fast and didn't notice how tight the spring was. Do I just turn from one ramp to the next or two ramps. It says 60 degrees but not really sure what that is.
Also How do I remove the helix or the shoe ramp as it is called in the manual. Thanks |

Re: Yamaha G9 Secondary Sheave re-install
Thanks for the video but I guess I should have been a little clearer. I cannot get the helix off the rear end diff. Is it just pressure fitted on. I need to remove the helix/ramp to change the 3 buttons.
Thanks again |

The helix just slides on a spline. Should slide off. Spray with some kind of thread loosener.

Re: Yamaha G9 Secondary Sheave re-install
Awesome thanks. Will give that a try when I get the parts. Tried a pry bar but didn't want to push to hard incase I cracked the diff.
Any ideas on how far I have to turn the sliding sheave to preload the spring Thanks again. |

Re: Yamaha G9 Secondary Sheave re-install
I've always just turned it past the next ramp--1/3 turn. I don't think you'll be able to wind it much more than that.

Re: Yamaha G9 Secondary Sheave re-install
You go to the next ramp. Stock B2 it would be close to the ramps pointing at each other (actually ramp and shoe). 90 degree is 1/4 turn, 60 is 2/3 of that. If you set it to B3 (tighter) you would have to turn it a little more. Tighter will make it rev more at part throttle but have more snap when you gas it, does not change full throttle action much at all. The wind up is called preload.
If your helix is stuck on there it could be the snap ring is crushed. They go bad and the helix slides over top of it and closer to the trans casing. They make a spacer that goes on and you toss the snap ring. If you run an aftermarket spring it will trash the snapring, sometimes they go bad from age as well. The helix (which is actually on the sheave and the little hub on the shaft just holds the shoes lol) just sits on there nothing holds it but the rest of the secondary. You don't want it to slide into the trans casing, that is not good. |
