How do I reassemble a driven clutch on a G2?
Awesome site and great people!
Does anyone have the procedure for putting my STOCK Driven clutch back together after I've installed new ramp shoes? It seems different from the power clutches that I've seen online. |

Do you mean the proper order of what parts go where? You could check a Yamaha parts diagram.

Thank you for responding. I mean like which hole do I put the spring in and how many degrees of torque do I put on it or do I put any on it?

Re: How do I reassemble a driven clutch on a G2?
This video is for an EZGO secondary clutch, but the idea is the same with the preload holes. The spring on the Yamaha is much smaller and doesn't require mounting in a vice. You assemble the Yamaha parts right on the input shaft in the same order as you removed them. Most people use the middle setting. The more spring tension you have, the more pressure will be applied to the belt. The idea is, when at rest/idle the secondary sheave will force the belt back up in the clutch, returning the cart to a lower gear ratio. This is called "Backshifting". A worn clutch will not backshift properly because sometimes the sheave faces wear and leave grooves that the belt will get caught in and not allow a proper backshift. A worn spring will have low tension, causing a similar action.

Re: How do I reassemble a driven clutch on a G2?
So, will putting more pressure on the spring reduce the top speed of the cart?
Also, if I don't have the recommended yamaha clutch tool, will I still be able to get it together? I saw something about applying pressure with a 2x4? |

Re: How do I reassemble a driven clutch on a G2?
More pressure will change the shift characteristic of your clutches. More pressure means lower gear for longer time. It should accelerate better at lower speeds, but might not hit "top speed" as fast. Again, I'd set it up in "the middle".
When you do your driven clutch, use a ratchet strap to pull the sliding sheave in to take the tension off the nut. Then remove the nut, use the puller tool to remove the fixed sheave and keyway. Slowly release the ratchet strap and remove. Pull off the sliding sheave and spring. Install new spring and sheave, clock to whatever position you wish, preload per service manual, and reassemble using the ratchet strap to hold it. Reassemble the rest of the parts in reverse order. Torque nut down per service manual. If you don't have a service manual, get one. It will be the best $30 you ever spent. |

Re: How do I reassemble a driven clutch on a G2?
Stock is B-2. If you look at the holes you will see you can move the clutch so many degrees with each hole change to adjust just about any setting. B2 is just past the ramp you preload it one ramp about 60 degrees of rotation then push it in to seat the shoes on ramps. You can use a piece of 2x4 to hold the sheave in and install the key, then the outer sheave and nut.
More preload raises the rpm at part throttle, it will make more noise and take more gas and be snappier (more responsive). Full throttle rpm will be about the same. Low throttle rpm will be higher the more preload you put on it. Lots of preload it will stay at full rpm all the time or the cart will not go. With an aftermarket spring you have to use straps, stock spring can be done by hand the umax spring is more of a challenge by hand. |
