Default 6 v Battery Observation

I have a Western Golf cart 42 volt (7-6 volt batteries). I had two older batteries before and I realized something was wrong with them when I plugged in my charger and saw one of them read 10.5 and the other read 9 volts (while being charged). The one that read 10.5 made a loud popping sound (luckily nothing bad happened). My question is...how high should a 6 volt battery read when plugged into the charger? I am just wondering a good range. My new batteries seem to be around the 7.1-7.5 range, but every once in a while one has gone up to 8 volts while charging. Just wondering if there is a safe range or if I am worry for about nothing... Thanks!

Default Re: 6 v Battery Observation

Technically, a lead-acid battery isn't fully charged until the SG of the electrolyte ceases to increase while a charging current is passing through it. Since the terminal voltage tracks the SG of the electrolyte, it can be inferred that a lead-acid battery isn't fully charged until the On-Charge voltage ceases to rise while a charging current is passing through the battery. However, the max On-Charge voltage of a good cell seldomly exceeds 2.8VPC (Volts per Cell), or 8.4V for a 6V battery.

Also, the On-Charge voltage of individual batteries in a pack should be within about 0.1V of each other.
