Default Solenoid shorting out

Please bear with me. This may be kinda long. I am working on a 2001 txt. Guy called me and said it wouldn't run very long on a charge. I look at it and he had a 5 amp charger with 36 v max output. I told him he needed at least a 15 amp charger. I get him a 20 amp charger that worked fine and shut off when it needed to. Couple weeks later he calls and tells me the cart quit. I go look at it to cut some of this short the batteries were toast. 5 out of 6 shorted out. They were fine before the new charger but, were 5 years old. I bought and installed new batteries and the cart would not move, solenoid will not engage. I have changed the controller, 3 solenoids, acc. switch and. What happens is when I get all good parts and turn on the power everything is fine until I depress the accelerator, then both small solenoid connections go to a dead short and will melt the wires. I have used good parts. No telling what I have burned up now. I have to fix this short before I can do the troubleshooting procedures. HELP

My guess is that it is a series drive and the diode was installed backwards on the solenoid coil.

Typically takes out pedal switch and/or MS-2 on F/R assembly, but may take out keyswitch or reed switch.

Leave the resistor and diode off the solenoid while troubleshooting and install them after you get cart running again.

Diode was toast. removed and put voltage to solenoid and it clicked. Now when my acc switch comes in I can maybe make some progress. Thanks.

Well the accel. switch came in and now the solenoid is working as it should. I have voltage on one side of the ITS. I cannot get voltage thru the ITS back to the black wire on the controller. Its new but I had that short when I put in the new one. Could it be fried? Also the only pin I get voltage in on the plug is the red one.

Which plug are you talking about, the 6-pin one on the controller or the 4-pin in-line plug on the gray cable going to the pedal box.

I have 37 volts on 3 of the motor leads when I press the accelerator. S1 only reads 4-5 volts. Motor will run off a battery charger.

Check the studs on the F/R switch assembly. All 4 should have pack voltage with pedal pushed just far enough to make solenoid click.
