Texas Golf Cart Laws
This is from House Bill 227
The fee to register a golf cart is $10.00..... financial responsibility means Insurance to get registration...... (Contrary to popular belief, the law states the slow moving triangle placard must be mounted 30 inches or more above the ground, and the law does not state next to the license plate.) From the document: (c)The operator of a golf cart or a side-by-side utility vehicle may operate the vehicle as provided by Subsection (b) if: (1)a slow-moving vehicle emblem, as defined by Section 547.001, is attached to the vehicle; (2)the vehicle is equipped with headlights and taillights which are illuminated; (3)the operator holds a Class A, B, C, or M driver ’s license, as defined by Sections 521.081-521.084 or a commercial driver ’s license under Chapter 522; (4)the vehicle is registered under Section 504.510 or 504.511; (5)the operator establishes financial responsibility for the vehicle under Section 601.051; and (6)the vehicle is equipped with a horn that complies with Section 547.501. SECTION 5.This Act takes effect September 1, 2007. This would have been great news, However this is the reply I got from Rep. Farabee who coauthored HB227: Unfortunately, the legislation relating to this issue (House Bill 227), of which I was a Joint-Author, failed to receive a public hearing in the Senate, and therefore was not passed by the Legislature. I was disappointed in the lack of a public hearing in the Senate as this legislation was passed overwhelmingly in the House in early April. There is more to the letter and they ARE planning to pursue this untill it passes. He encouraged me to send any supportive documents showing cause for the bill. Re: NEW Texas Golf Cart Laws
So basically in TX we need the following.
1. DL 2. Liabilty Insurance 3. Registration 4. Lights, turn signals, brake lights 5. Slow moving vehicle sign. (reflective triangle) What it doesn't say is "Where" you are allowed to drive. I will have to look into that part. This doesn't mean you can drive your cart down the highway. |

The only places you can drive under this new law is on city streets and county roads where the posted speed limit is no higher than 35 miles per hour. However, you can cross a road which is posted as higher but not travel it. Driving a cart that travels no faster than 15 or 20 mph, down a highway, would be foolish. (Oh and thanks Roady.... I saw the change) |
