Question 4 Wave Washers! Why?

Took the front end of my CC Precedent apart for maintenance and a little repair.
When I removed the king pins I found 4 wave washers, two on each pin. The manual calls for one on each pin.
Does anyone know why extra wave washers would have been added?? Trying to correct a problem of some sort?

I would guess someone changed the bushings and never noticed the wave washers and added two more.

... or a savvy mechanic used the extra wave washers as shims to take some slop out of the front end??

To my understanding, the wave washers are designed to absorb force when under load. With that in mind, it will be important that the correct torque is applied to the king pin nut to ensure that the wave washer(s) is functioning as designed. Full compression of the wave washer may or may not be desirable as its function is not to act as a lock washer ... rather as a spring or shock absorber. Overtightening a wave washer would negate this effect.

The extra wave washers would add an increased spring force at that connection ... twice the spring force I believe. It is anyone's guess if that is desirable ... but as you said, the factory connection only had one wave washer, so that would be the standard to compare by. If one is good, so two would be better might not apply in your case.

That's a great possibility. May be that simple.

That's what I was worried about, but don't know enough to know why anyone would do it. I've had a "bump" in the front left tire forever. I always thought it was due to a flat spot on the tire since it seemed to improve after riding a few minutes. No problems with steering.
Thank you!

Thank you so much for the great info! I bought new wave washers and will put one on each side and see what happens. Also, I replaced all the bushings and rods except for the spindle bushings. I bought new king pins and they fit well with no wobble/movement. Also I installed new Timken bearings. If there was some strange reason for the two washers, hopefully I've eliminated it.
I have a inch/lb torque wrench and will be sure to torque to specs.
Again, thank you!!

An inch-lb torque wrench will likely be too light for torqueing the king pin nut ... according to the specs I saw online, the king pin nut torque should be 70 ft-lbs. 70 ft-lbs is 840 inch-lbs (1 ft-lb = 12 inch-lbs), which is most likely outside the range of your inch-lb torque wrench.

Confirm that the 70 ft-lbs is the correct torque spec from your sources ... I found it on page 7-14 of the 2009-2011 Electric Precedent Maintenance and Service Manual at: http://goldenpro.fi/wp-content/uploa...-2009-2011.pdf

Also interesting from that manual is from page 7-14 which says: "7. Remove the wave washer and inspect it. If the washer is broken or has a wave bottom to wave crest height dimension of less than 0.040 inch (1 mm), it must be replaced." So it is a good idea that you are replacing the wave washers with new ones.

Let us know how things work out once you get it all back together.

Funny thing is that I was reading the service manual last night and thought, "I need to make a list of all the torque specs as a quick reference." I don't want to have to refer to my laptop every time I pick up a bolt.

I have no earthly idea why I said inch/lb wrench. At times, my senior brain takes control over my fingers on the keyboard. My son says I have brain farts.

I do have a ft/lb wrench.

If it's possible to wear out a PDF file, my repair manual should be toast. I know the exact page you mentioned and the measurement of the wave washer. I was looking at the old washers yesterday and remembered I need to buy a new micrometer. I would never trust my manual measurement.

I'm waiting on a new adjustment eccentric that I ordered. Should arrive by Friday so this weekend I'll get it all back together. Will let you know how it goes.

I appreciate your help very much!!
