Running too rich
I have a 1987 ez go with a 2pg motor in it. I’ve put new piston rings in and a complete gasket kit. Motor runs but smokes too much. I shut off my in line fuel valve to run the carb empty and after a few seconds it seemed like the RPM went 2x as it was pulling the remaining fuel out of the bowl. All of a sudden I had power but when I let off the accelerator and then got back into it and the engine backfired. I have adjusted on the carb to see if I am running too rich but it really doesn’t seem to make any difference. I have replicated turning the fuel off and it running well multiple times, any idea on what can cause this? Thanks in advance

Re: Running too rich
There is no adjustment on that carburetor. It has fixed jets. It's common for engines to rev higher as they run out of fuel because they are getting leaner. If it really is running too rich, it could be a ripped diaphragm in the fuel pump, or an air restriction such as clogged muffler, or dirty air filter. The proper oil mixture after break in is 128:1. New rings require a tank full at 40:1. That will cause smoke too.

Re: Running too rich
When I get home from work tomorrow, I will post some pictures on how to properly rig your throttle to prevent backfiring. Dabble Inn might be able to jump in now with the pictures before tomorrow.

Re: Running too rich
Hi there, here's a pic of the factory anti backfire spring from an 88. I think they began doing this in 87 but not sure, my 85 doesn't have it so had to modify according to CA instructions . ........
Here's pics of a bad fuel pump diaphragm, it'll make it run rich too. As you can tell by the first pic a rip is really hard to see |
