Clutch Alignment

Hi All,

My 440 Project is moving right along. Right now i have my motor mounts tacked on and before I weld them into place I want to make sure my clutch alignment is correct.

Now, I aligned my clutches based on the center of each of them. However my concern is that once the drive clutch closes and the driven clutch opens that the belt will no longer be straight and that I will burn through belts.

When I align the back of each clutch the belt is not straight either. What is the best way to align the clutches?

Below are pictures of how I currently have it configured. The belt is pretty much straight to both clutches. Any thoughts? Or am I spot on and should just weld those suckers on..

It depends on which side moves on each clutch... in the second pic it looks like the engine clutch will move the belt to the right when it closes up (towards the engine) and the driven clutch looks like it is going to move the belt to the left (away from the rearend) IF that is correct you are already slightly crocked and then in high gear you are gonna be much more crooked... I think you need to move the engine to the left a strong 1/2 the clutch movement..... But! Wait for a second opinion before you do it

Scotty's correct the rear clutch is on backwards. It will not work like that.

i'm with scotty, i would move the engine left! so the misalignment is at lower rpms.

Tom,

Are you saying the driven clutch needs to be flipped so that the spring is pointing towards the diffy?

backwards? snowmobiles have run this setup for years, this is a Polaris 700 with the alignment tool. you can get a good idea of the offset.

The backwards comment has me all confused now. I don't really understand. Maybe to have the driven clutch open towards the differential???

Should I just move the motor about 1/2" - 3/4" in the direction shown by the arrow in the picture below?

well i don't want to step on toes! tom knows his stuff, and driven clutches on golf carts do work the other way. they move to the right as viewed in this picture but snowmobiles have always moved to the left with the belt offset.

my 2 cents is move your engine to the left as in your picture.
