Rear end whine on decelerate
Hey all, Happy Fathers Day to the dads out there
I am working on a 98 TXT series for a friend that has a slight whine when slowing down. Rear end took a strike to the pan, rock, stump or the like, had to replace the pan cause it was leaking(Refiled it with 30wt.). Did not see any obvious damage to the gear but it was rubbing slightly on the pan. Noise wasn't there before, ideas ? Thks |

Re: Rear end whine on decelerate
The gears are probably shifted a little making the meshing off a little.

Shifted ?
I wouldn't think they would move other than rotate ?? I admit I didn't look at it real hard but lying on your back on the ramp of a trailer ain't real comfy and all I was trying to do is change the pan. I'm can pull it all apart but I was just looking for some previous knowledge. |

When you install the gears they have to be shimmed a little so they mesh and run true.I guess with the little hit it took its making the gears run cattywompus.

Re: Rear end whine on decelerate
If they were out of line, wouldn't they whine all the time not just on decell?

Re: Rear end whine on decelerate
not really. When you are accelerating, the gears are "bound" and under load, when you are decelerating (foot off the pedal), the gears are no longer under load and therefore have the ability to have that small amount of "freeplay" that would cause them to whine.

Re: Rear end whine on decelerate
Thanks all for the help. Guess I'll get it in the air so I can pull it apart again. Was hoping the only damage was the pan. Any suggestions on how to get it back right ?

Re: Rear end whine on decelerate
honestly, you could try re-shimming the gear set, but I'm not even sure that is gonna fix it. The problem is that the hit caused damage, even if you can't see it, there is damage done to the gears. The only time I have ever seen this repaired was 1 of 3 ways. Eiteher install all new gears (including the spider gear), install a new rear end, or add (and I DON'T advise this) sawdust to the rear end (only heard of this method, never tried it myself)......
You could also check the Input shaft, it is possible (unlikely but possible) that the bearing on the input shaft might have been damaged in the impact and the bearing is now causing a whine. |
