91 gas club car DS cuts out after a 1 mile run

Hello all,

I have recently acquired a 91 Gas club car DS with the KF82 engine in it. It runs pretty decent at first however after about 1 mile it cuts out and quits. My first thought was that it wasn't getting any fuel due to the fact that the fuel filter didn't have any gas in it.

I bought the tune-up/maintenance kit and replaced the spark plug, air filter, all the gas lines and the fuel filter. I changed the oil as well. I also replaced the fuel pump as I thought it might be bad since I could blow both ways through it. After getting all the basic maintenance kit stuff listed installed I gave it a test... still had the same issues. fuel filter wasn't full but the line below it had gas in it still so I'm assuming its not a gas issue?

I thought maybe it was getting too hot as it smelled very hot and the seat seemed to have some heat. I took off the fan cover and blew a crap ton of dust and dirt out of the cooling fan. I went a step further and washed out the entire underside and engine of the cart as it was pretty caked with dirt. After putting it all back together and taking it for another test run... still had the same issues with it cutting out after a 1 mile run. Still seemed hot so I stuck a meat thermometer up by the spark plug and it registered over 260 degrees. that sounds a little hot not?

Any ways I'm running out of ideas on what to try. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.

When it quits, how long before it starts up again?

Generally if I let it sit for about 5 min or so it will go again.

The next time it cuts off, pull the spark plug and see if it's wet with fuel. You could have a bad needle/seat in the carb float bowl. It may be letting too much fuel in, then it floods and quits.

I've pulled the plug before and its not flooding out. Its a light tan color and not wet.

I'll check for spark next chance I get to go for a run.

Sounds like the old classic coil breakdown issue. Check for a spark as soon as it quits. No spark ? = bad coil 99% of the time. They break down with heat but will test OK on the bench. Damndest thing but it is usually the answer.

Ding ding ding!!! Took the words right out of my mouth and I'd be willing to be that's the issue.

Next time it quits pull the plug immediately and check for spark.

Just wanted to give everyone a quick update. I got myself a tiny tach and found that the governor had been previously adjusted and it was running close to and over 5k when opened up. I have since readjusted the governor and have it back down to 4k. Since making that change I took it out for a spin today and made it a good 2.5 miles with no issues.

This leads me to my next question, would over reving it cause it to get hot and stall out?

Hopefully sometime this week I can get it out for a further journey to see how it goes and if the issue comes back.

Yeah it could be the rev limiter. Up to 1989 Club Car gas carts had no rev limiter, then in 1990 they added one. I hear they can be finicky.
