Default Slipping Starter motor belt

At the end of this build, but small things keep comonh up.

I am using the EZGO starter Generator with my Vegas 460. I have a ported and milled head on this clone along with an advance key.

When the motor is cold, the starter turns the motor with know problem, but when hot, the starter motor pulley slips. I have tightened this thing to the point of stitching the belt. It still slips.

When the stock engine, the tension-er was a treadled rod, and you could get it pretty tight, but the clone setup is just a bar/

You guys have any tricks to solve this issue? How about a cogged belt? would that slip too. Can the pulley itself be de-glazed or otherwise roughed up?

I would get a new belt, it will likely grip better. You could take a scotchbrite pad to the pulley, I've done that with good success. You could also use the scotchbrite pad on the sides of the belt as well, might buy you some time until you get the new belt. Once a belt slips it will develop a shiny spot wherever the slip has occurred, if the pulley stops on the shiny part, the next time you go to start it will slip on the shiny. Over time the whole belt will get shiny and needs to be replaced.

CPP has a cogged belt I just put one on. I would check the valve lash make sure its tight at no more than .004. The more it is the looser, the less compression release you get and it turns over harder. If you have a cam in it you could have problems if no comp release is on the new cam. A little secret, 1.3 rocker arms make the comp release work even better lol. Another issue is some cant get them to turn over good with alum flywheels if you happen to have one. It can also be its pre igniting if you have a timing advance key in it, or maybe it is anyway so try some premium in it and see. You could try to richen the idle. All fails if you have a thin head gasket in you can put a thicker one in. I run the thin one with .080 decked off the clone head and stock cam it works fine. It will slip if not tight, but this new belt seems much nicer than the old one. Mine would start hard hot with a 4 degree key and cut head on regular, but when I put the 1.3 rockers in it was much nicer just like stock because the comp release works more. It will miss like crazy at low idle now but sounds neat. It would start ok on premium before the rockers when it was hot 90% of the time.

sho hit it on the head.

Make sure that valve lash is tight enough for the compression release to work, if not, its not going to want to turn over on a compression stroke.

Do you have the 3/8" or 1/2" v-belt?

You guys at Vegas Carts built the motor.Could you have gotten the valve lash too loose? I am using your setup to include the pulley (i/2 inch) and the belt supplied in the EZGO clone install kit.

I have the advance key (also installed by VC), but i am running 100LL Aviation gas so I dont think i am getting and pre-ignition on startup.

A trick you can try is put a kill switch on and use it until the engine is turning over then let off it to fire it. Only has to ground the kill wire. Or until you figure out a proper fix.

Lash is easy to check with feeler gauge just take the cover off the top to get at rockers. It is not uncommon for it to change as the engine breaks in. When the gauge just slides in you have it, it will change as you tighten it up so you have to fiddle around with them. Don't overtighten or crank on a locked nut and break something, it is easy to adjust or you are not doing it right. Different engines can use different hardware on the rockers.
