Default Aluminum battery trays

I noticed a fair amount of oxidation on part of the battery tray/frame, so I removed all the batteries. A lot of the "L" shaped aluminum holding the batteries has corroded pretty bad. I was planning on doing some type of welding repair, but was hoping to find out what 'type' of aluminum the frame is made from, so as to use the same quality and benefit the welding process. Hopefully someone here knows since there are many variables. IIRC one type is 6061.

For angle there is pretty much just two (2) choices without a special extrusion order, that being 6061 and 6063. The frames are 6061 as far as I know and that is what I have used on any projects. 6061 is the most commonly used aluminum alloy for angle, channel, hex, I-Beam, Pipe, etc. It is specified in most any application due to its strength, heat treatability, comparatively easy machining, and weldability with a tensile strength of 45,000 psi. The main alloy ingredients of 6061 are magnesium and silicon. 6063 is pretty and smooth, it has a surface finish that is far nicer than the other commercially available alloys and its strength is significantly less at a tensile strength of 27,000 psi. It is usually used in trim and other projects where strength is not required.

You were headed the right direction. And it is best welded with a MIG.... Stick will work, but much harder if in the cart.

Both of mine are Hobart (MIG and DC Stick).

Been attempting to 'clean' the battery trays, but it is tuff! It is very important when MIG welding to have clean aluminum. So for right now I am reinforcing the trays with new support aluminum and attaching with rivets. I still have to fabricate and attach the middle section, but the outside trays are done. View of left side, right side, and from below left side. AFTER all is attached I may attempt to add some welds.

Just be sure not to create an "rub" joints. The trays are purposely designed the way you see them to contact the reinforced portions (sides/corners) of the batteries so don't move something so far in or high enough it cause a friction point on the battery case and then rubs a hole in it....

I have a real thin sheet of aluminum, I may lay over it to cover the rivets that could be a possible problem. The outside piece was to replace the extremely weaken original piece, which was about to fail. The other is set to meet the length of battery, 10.25"

I was wondering the same thing about those rivets.

What about some adhesive backed rubber or plasiic?
