Default Confused about tire pressure

My memory has gotten bad and I can't remember how much air I usually put in my big tires. Yesterday, I read the side of the tires and it said something like
"20psi while operating on road", but then in another place on the tire it said not to go above 36 PSI. I ride this only on rough ground. We put in 30, but I'm not sure if that's too high?? It's really hard to know when these particular tires need air, since they always look good, even when the pressure has gotten low.
Thanks.

20psi is typical running pressure and 36 is max for seating bead when mounting. Running too high pressure will wear out center of tire tread early.

20 P.S.I is operating pressure...as stated 36 P.S.I would be put in when installed new tire to seat bead, then dropped down to 20 directly afterwards... 30 P.S.I prob feels very rough when hitting bumps and also tends to cause swervy steering at top end.

Bringing this older post back to the future, I found out the hard way why my front tires are wearing in the middle.

you can always put a thick chalk line across the tire, drive 30 feet and check the wear and adjust as needed

I was running 36psi in my tires as that's what was stamped in the sidewall, it didn't have a 2nd psi rating.
I used the water method for checking the tire print. 26psi is giving me the best overall print
