Default 1981 EZGO Marathon

I have a 1981 EZGO Marathon. The engine barely moves in forward but in reverse it seems to have plenty of power. I remember reading about this awhile back but I want to be sure what I need to do.

For a rebuild, can I just do a top rebuild or do I need to do the complete rebuild? I'm not wanting to put alot of money into this.
Thanks in advance.
Jeremy

Compression test in fwd and rev will tell you the tale. 100psi minimum.
You can do just the top if, once you pull the bottle you inspect the bottom end for play, rust, loose bearings, etc..
The other thing to check is the crank seals, if they are leaking, you won't be able to draw in the correct mixture of A/F.
Your engine should be a Robin 244 2 stroke. EVERYTHINGCARTS had the top end kit for like $150.

Good luck!

How do you do a compression test?

Well you need to buy or rent a compression tester. It's a small gauge on a flexible tube with a fitting at the end.
You remove your spark plug, spin the fitting into the spark plug's place and crank the engine. You will get a reading. Do this in forward and reverse directions. 100 is minimum, preferably higher.

Thanks alot. I went ahead and bought a top end rebuild kit from everything carts and a few other things. The extra 5% discount was nice.

I did a compression test today. Forward was around 75 and Reverse was 110. I ordered the top end rebuild kit early thursday morning from everythingcarts.com and was hoping they would ship it out the same day or on friday. But it still says not shipped and my payment status says credit card captured. Hopefully they will ship it first thing on monday so I can get it rebuilt. I will post some pics of the rebuild.

Cool. Good luck. Just pay attention to how it comes apart specifically the rings and piston position. Also, it's not a bad idea to use some black RTV on the jug gasket.

OK.... I got everything rebuilt, reinstalled and ..................
It runs the same way it did before. Great in reverse and not very good in forward. I haven't had a chance to do a compression test.. I put a new top end kit: new piston, head and everything.
Does anyone have any ideas what it could be?
