Default 97 Carryall clutch issue - bangs into reverse

When going forward the clutch acts normally, I can slowly increase RPM's and the clutch slowly and smoothly engages. But in reverse I need more RPM's to engage the clutch and when it does engage it does so with a bang and the car lurches backward.

In addition to being uncomfortable and annoying, I see this as a potential safety issue.

I need to know what to do to fix this.

Have you unhooked the shift cable at the trans and moved it manually? See if it's smooth or if it doesn't want to go all the way into reverse. I may be as simple as a FnR cable adjustment.

Thanks for the lead. I'll pull the cable and check it out tomorrow. I have found that sometimes I do have difficulty moving the shifter into reverse.v
