How would a Hall effect sensor work? Do I need to feed it with a power source?
A Hall Effect sensor needs power to work. Basically, power is applied to the X-axis of a crystal and the current flow through the Y-axis is proportional to the magnetic flux density impinged on the crystal. With post-processing and calibration, they can be used for all sorts of things.

DC amp probes, magnetic field strength meters, position sensors and pulse generators for tachometers/speedometers.

Can't see the number of wires. If it is only two, it is an inductor type pickup coil. If three (or more) it is probably a Hall Effect device.

You need a NIXIE readout for it.

I give up. I must not be getting a good connection. It's only two wires.
