G9/JG5 Pickup Coil Question

Hi Folks-

There's 3 wires at the pickup coil, W/R, W/B & B. Black ties to the engine case for grounding the engine. Wondering what the jobs of the other 2 are. Assumption in White/Red is signal, White/Black is another ground/neg. ?

I'm looking to try an aftermarket CDI & wondering what's gonna go where.

There is a wiring diagram up in the stickies posts. The yami is a TCI not a CDI, but I don't know what is compatible with the trigger.

Thanks sho, got several versions of the wiring schmatics, but none tell what the purpose is.
Correct on the CDI/TCI. Main difference being that TCI provides constant voltage, CDI is intermitent voltage, to the primary coil, if I recall.

For a few bucks I can see if the buggy will run on a short term basis. I can tweak afterwards.

The wires from the ignition pickup is the trigger or pulse that tells the TCI when to fire the coil, in simple terms.

If you are looking for a CDI for your cart, you will also need a different ignition coil.

Thanks for the link, bbailey, good page. Checking out the diagrams got me to thinking as well. When I had the rotor/reluctor/cooling fan off for cleaning, I don't recall a stationary magnet

Still curious about the pickup wires though. The 2 go to the TCI unit like so



Just wonder how this setup works.

I'm assuming the pickup (pulser) coil generates an AC signal, thus the re & black stripes for polarity. If this is the case, I'll need to create a rectifier to get the DC needed.

I thought it was a hall effect, it has a window in the wheel on my G9. It simply pulses the TCI and it makes a spark via 12v to power the coil. It runs like 30 degrees advanced and retards 30 at idle for no advance. I want to put it on my clone need to figure out what I need to do.

Hey sho, it is a "window" as opposed to a raised timing mark, so it may well be hall effect. That would make that part of things similar to Harley. If I recall, the window was 3/4"-1" wide. Probably have a pick from the tear down here somewhere.

So if that's the case, doesn't the pickup create the magnetic current as there's no stationary magnet?

Dang, with everything fighting me on this CDI conversion, maybe I should just spend the $ on a yammy replacement box & make it a present to my daddy, LOL....

This is about the going price $125 shipped) for an aftermarket Ignitor. I would think you would have that much in a CDI and coil, plus time making it work.
