Ampmeter
I think i remember someone mentioning that they had installed an ampmeter on their cart. If so, does anyone have a suggestion of a good one for carts? Hopefully digital.

Re: Ampmeter
I googled '500 amp meter' last night and saw the same meters in your picture 'crash'. They come in many ratings, volts or amps, and the ability to show both at the same time is tempting, but...
The ones I saw were all open on the back and probably not very robust or tolerant of dirty, wet, buggy golf cart dashboards. Also, none of them would work off of 36v, they could measure 0-100v, but you had to have a lower voltage for the display, usually 6-18v. They used shunts for the higher amp measurement but I am not familiar with shunt design and how strong they are mechanically or how well the shunt tolerates golf cart shenanigans. |

this may help .. oh one thing i did see is meter is Operating voltage: DC 4.5 ~ 30V. so it need less than 36v to power it |

Re: Ampmeter
I bought a meter/shunt combo from eBay. I installed my shunt right in the middle of my eight batteries, with the hope that the batteries would dampen the PWM output. Mine seems to give reasonable values, but I've never datalogged to compare. Another list member was having problems with his readings of an identical combo, and was looking into filtering the shunt output.
With my meter, it had to have an isolated power source, so I built a small DC to DC converter, fed it 48 volts and it outputs 5 or 12 (can't remember) power for the meter. An all in one volt ammeter looks like a good way to do it. |

Re: Ampmeter
Here's the one I got:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/3-1-2-Blue-L...item563e4c9e91 As you can see, the shunt is pretty bullet-proof, something you said you were concerned about. Mine's also open, but I don't get very much dust, dirt or water behind my dash, though it gets everywhere else. |

Re: Ampmeter
I have one of these installed in my travel trailer and find it pretty handy. Properly calibrated, it becomes a true "fuel gauge" for your cart. One will probably find its way into the dash of my new cart.
see: http://www.jerryrig.com/convert/step11.html or do a search for "Cruising Equipment e-meter". This is not the only brand of amp-hour meter, just the one I'm familiar with. |
