Got about a 6 hour charge on it untill the over heat light on the charger started blinking. Let it cool, wouldn't drive more than the first time of 15 feet.

6 Batteries were 6v +

The other 2 were, 3.9v and 4.0v

Would the dead cells cause the charger overheat?, and not let the power of the other batteries work?

The overheat light will blink, which is fine. That's when the charger cuts back to 50% charge current to do its job. You have to stop nursing it and let it work. Make sure it has ventilation.

Yes, dead cells can cause charging issues. You may have to break down and by new batteries. You could go with 4 12V instead of 8 6V which would save you some money, but will reduce your range a little bit.

What specs do I need to look for in the 12v batteries?

The bigger the better of course, but go with your budget. Deep cycle of course. You will have to change the algorithm on the charger to #5, instead of what's on it now. I attached the instructions how to do that.

That should do okay. We have used a 31EV but that should still work.

I mean in your opinion will it give me at least 50% of what the stock 6v set up would do?
